The Sturgis Family moved to Vero Beach in 1954 from Hammond, Indiana. Jack Senior and Josephine Sturgis started Sturgis Lumber & Plywood Company in 1955. The family became active in their church and many other community groups including the Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club, and Rotary Club. Jack Senior served as Mayor and a member of the City Council in the 1960’s.
Josephine Sturgis taught second grade at Vero Beach Elementary School and Rosewood Elementary School for 29 years. She taught over 900 students over the years.
Jack Junior and Charlie Sturgis grew up hunting and fishing in the area with their father. Jack Junior graduated from the University of Florida and was active duty in the Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam. Charlie graduated from University of South Florida. Both returned to Vero Beach to work in the family business. After the passing of their father in 2002, they continued the family business.
Jack Junior passed away in May 2016 from a brave battle with cancer.
Jack’s daughter, Ashley Sturgis McInerney, recently joined the business. She moved from New Hampshire after 12 years in New England. She graduated from both Clemson University and University of Florida and has many years of experience in Banking. Ashley is happy to join the team and be the third generation of Sturgis’ to continue the business.
